iPhone 5 Speculation: Why Bigger Display Is Likely

Aside from all of the buzz about a 4G LTE iPhone 5, the next most wanted iPhone 5 feature is a bigger display. Ever since 2007 the iPhone has been rocking the same decently sized 3.5 inch display. And while quite a few iPhone owners are happy with the display, many want the new iPhone 5 to have a display that is more comparable to the many Android phones on the market. We’ve reported lately about the iPhone 5 having a display that is as big as 4.6 inches–as well as a display that is the same 3.5 inches. So which is likely to happen? That’s anyone’s guess at this point, but here’s some reasons why we think the iPhone 5 will have a bigger display.

iPhone 5 Bigger Display Reason #1: Competition

Apple might be riding high from their recent stock and profit successes, but they still realize that they are in a tough battle with Android. In order to overtake Android as the most commonly used smartphone on the market–and to continue building off of their record setting profits–Apple must continue to compete and compete well. While we know that Apple isn’t always keen to do what Android does, the issue of having a bigger display on the iPhone 5 is one area where we can see Apple taking after Android. After all, Apple did this with iOS notifications, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see them do this in the name of competition.

iPhone 5 Bigger Display Reason #2: Changes

We know that former Apple CEO Steve Jobs was opposed to the idea of having an iPhone with a display bigger than 3.5 inches, but now that Tim Cook is in charge, things seem to be changing for the iPhone 5 and other Apple products. For one, Cook made the decision to use an Apple TV design that Jobs himself rejected several years back. So it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cook go against Jobs’ desires to keep the iPhone 5 display small by introducing an iPhone 5 with a bigger display.

Another aspect of change to look at is the fact that, aside from some slight changes to the iPhone’s thickness and shape, the iPhone has largely remained the same over the years. What better way to introduce a new, reinvented iPhone 5 than by giving the device something that none of the other iPhones had: a bigger display.

iPhone 5 Bigger Display Reason #3: The Customers

Apple is a company that is known for listening to its customers and going out of their way to fulfill the wishes of the customer. This is a company where the CEO typically personally answers emails that are sent to him from customers, and it’s a company that employs highly trained geniuses to ensure that problems with the iPhone and other Apple products are handled swiftly. It’s also a company that introduced features to the iPhone that customers had been asking for, like notifications, video recording, a better camera, and full-featured voice dictation. It stands to reason that Apple will listen to their customers, many of which want an iPhone 5 with a display of more than 3.5 inches. And if they won’t make all iPhone 5s bigger, perhaps they’ll release two different iPhone 5 models: one that maintains the 3.5 inch form factor and one that is significantly bigger.

What Do You Think?

Do you think the iPhone 5 will come with a bigger display? Which would you prefer: a 3.5 inch iPhone 5 or a 4.3 inch iPhone 5? Leave us a comment below and make your voice heard.

3.5 is too small nowadays! It would be much better for a 4.3"+ size screen. Not making it too big but big enough where it is beautifully clear to most eyes and still small enough to fit in your pocket without feeling like you have a textbook in there. The customers want this. I've had very iPhone on launch day and hoped for a bigger screen since iPhone 3G

      Hi Mike,

Having owned both a 4.3" phone and an iPhone, I'd have to agree with you. 3.5" is a bit small. A 4.3" iPhone 5 would probably satisfy most iPhone owners.

      Thanks for the comment!

I have a droid bionic now. I want to go back to the iphone. The bigger the size the better, I have bad arthrities and the larger cell phone is easier for me to hold and use. I had an iphone when they first came out.I sold it because I don't like how you can only use your music to play music and for a ringtone. With a droid you can use your itunes for all sorts of notifications. For instance when I get a text my full song plays and that's what I want in a cell.I'm a music buff and I want to hear my tunes play. You can use your itunes music for any part of a droid, last time I had my iphone you couldn't. Those are the 2 biggest things that I'm searching for in a new cell phone. Did you see the new Samsung, its a small tablet and an iphone. Now that's a nice size, I hope apple would fix these things cause I really want to get a iphone5.

      Hi Mockingbirdlane,

Thanks for the comment! We think Apple will release a bigger iPhone sometime, most likely it'll be the iPhone 5. It's clear the demand is out there, so we'd be shocked if Apple didn't release a bigger iPhone 5.

      Hi Bri,

Thanks for the comment! You make a good point–there's a lot of iPhone users out there who prefer the iPhone's current smaller, slimmer form factor. That's why we think Apple might just release two versions of the iPhone 5 : one that is bigger and one that is the same size.

I really agree with people preferring just a bit bigger screen. 4in is quite enough! It would be little bigger but not too big. A phone should be handy as far as normal use goes. I also agree with Bri, if you need a bigger screen, get a tablet. 4in max is my opinion!!!!

      Hi Jay,

I agree, if you go too big the phone just becomes bulky. An iPhone 5 that is around 4 inches would probably be perfect for most users.
